description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A practical hybrid course that trains lawyers in Cyprus on effective courtroom advocacy through live instruction, simulated trials, and filmed performances. Covers both civil and criminal litigation, with structured feedback based on Cyprus law and the Hampel method.

The need for this course occurs, because this course provides comprehensive, hands-on training in courtroom advocacy for lawyers practicing in Cyprus. The programme is structured to develop essential advocacy skills, particularly examination-in-chief, cross-examination, objection handling, and oral submissions within the framework of Cyprus legal procedure and evidentiary rules. The course is delivered through a combination of live online instruction and immersive in-person simulations, including a fully filmed moot court and peer-reviewed performance analysis. Despite the technical legal knowledge possessed by many lawyers in Cyprus, few have the opportunity to formally train in advocacy techniques before appearing in court. Practical courtroom skills, such as handling difficult witnesses, structuring effective questions, and managing real-time objections, are often developed inconsistently, through trial and error. This creates significant variability in. performance and confidence levels, especially among newly qualified lawyers and younger litigation professionals. Additionally, with the introduction of the new Civil Procedure Rules and evolving expectations from the judiciary, there is an urgent need for lawyers to sharpen their courtroom delivery, ensure procedural compliance, and present clear, persuasive arguments in both civil and criminal proceedings. Law firms and legal departments are increasingly recognising that poorly delivered
advocacy affects client outcomes, judicial credibility, and firm reputation.

Why do employers want to train staff in advocacy?

Law firms have a strong incentive to invest in structured advocacy training. Enhancing the practical courtroom skills of their legal teams leads to better performance in hearings, more efficient preparation of cases, improved win rates, and greater client satisfaction. Junior lawyers who receive formal advocacy training become valuable team members faster and require less supervision in contentious matters.

This course enables employers to train their staff in a measurable programme that directly impacts how their lawyers perform in court. The structured simulations, trial strategy development, and feedback process allow legal professionals to build both technical precision and courtroom confidence, skills that are increasingly essential in a competitive legal environment.

What the Hampel Method is and why it is used?

The course integrates the Hampel Method, a widely respected advocacy training technique developed by Justice George Hampel of Australia and adopted by the UK Inns of Court. The method is based on a six-step feedback model used to train barristers in England and other common law jurisdictions. It involves immediate, focused critique after a short advocacy performance.

By combining Cyprus law, real case materials, filmed performance, peer review, and Hampel-based feedback, this course gives participants a rare opportunity to master courtroom communication in a professional, safe, and realistic training environment.
